Wyrd House Julianne Q Johnson Books Reviews
This book was good, but never made it to great. There were a lot of characters, and even up until the end of the book, I kept getting them confused. There weren't any spelling errors, and the book seemed well edited, but the pacing left something to be desired. The story really dragged for the first half of the book, and even in the second half it seemed more like the action was an afterthought. It's a clean romance. I didn't really get any chemistry between the main characters.
There was a lot that was good with the story, too. I felt like it had a great sense of place, and that the author definitely knows Louisville and Gatlinburg very well. The characters did all have personalities, and didn't feel like cardboard cut outs. I liked the handling of their various gifts, even though I'm not really sure of their limits yet. I would probably read another book by the author. The story was a complete story, no cliffhanger, but potential for more tales, as there are numerous other characters living in the house.
I'd give this story a 3.5. I'm rounding down because I think that this could have been a really exciting story, but all of the major plot points felt more like they were set up just to be knocked down moments later.
Absolutely enchanting! When a novel starts with a gigantic, friendly dog, I'm already hooked. There are more charming animals taking the story forward, but always retaining their intrinsic character, no awkward anthropomorphism to spoil the intelligent narrative.
At thirty-two, Myra Erickson finds herself in a new town, alone, heartbroken and in dire need of a job. She fled her previous life in Indianapolis after a bitter romantic breakup and a family fight. Now her talent for photography has brought her to the attention of two very different men. Max Carter is the head of the influential Preservation Society but there is something about him that sets Myra's metaphysical antennae on full alert. Jeff Andrews, a handsome but brusque neighbour, is forever chiding Myra for her friendship with his gigantic guard dog. Soon after her first job interview, Myra comes under attack and her witch's magic is urgently needed to protect her and her new friends in The Pink Palace.
The descriptions of Myra's magic gift reminded me of the masterly treatment by Mary Stewart. It is magic at its most human and believable, vulnerable and strong at the same time, and I loved reading about the magic spells. The story has all the ingredients of a great, feel-good read with enough suspense to keep me hooked and turning the pages, including the perfect male love interest. The famous historical quarter of Louisville, Kentucky is beautifully described.
Although a strong romantic theme forms the backbone of the story, the assorted group of people who inhabit Wyrd House play a pivotal role and provide much of the human interest. The dialogue is fluent and realistic. Characterization is excellent with a wealth of very likeable individuals and some satisfying villains. The pacing throughout is even and sustained. Suitable for the widest audience, this was a pleasure to read, and a book I will certainly want to read again.
Excellent story about interesting characters. Loved all the animals. Especially the ferrets. I hope there are more books to come.
A very fun little book. Enjoyed the whole group of interesting folks living in the house and the idea of stopping a bad creature from damaging folks around him.
Fun fantastic and thought provoking. Faith over knowledge or not? Extremely well researched... made me want to visit the places in the book...even order the meals! Was left wanting more when the book ended... hope there will be a series
This book would be perfect for fans of paranormal, mystery, cozy mystery, and well researched magic. All of them are mixed into a sweet read in Wyrd House as a group of people with special talents take on a life force draining vampire.
